The Fun and Functional Trail Buddy

If you’re on the hunt for a trail running shoe that’s as comfortable as it is rugged, look no further than the Nike Wildhorse 8. I bought these shoes using a gift card I received for my birthday from our CTO, Sitar. So far, I’ve had a chance to put some good miles on them in the Marin and the South Bay area of San Francisco. It’s a delightful blend of durability and plush comfort, designed to keep you going mile after mile, whether you’re on a thru-hike or an adventurous run.

Reasons to Cheer

  • Incredibly Comfortable: Slip your feet into the Wildhorse 8, and it’s like stepping on clouds. The React midsole delivers unparalleled comfort, making long runs feel like a breeze.
  • Great Cushioning: The ample cushioning not only protects your feet but also offers a gentle bounce, adding a spring to your step even on rough terrain.
  • High Stability: With a broad platform and rock plate, these shoes provide excellent stability, helping you tackle uneven trails with confidence.

Reasons to Pause

  • A Tad Heavy: At 12.07 ounces per shoe, the Wildhorse 8 isn’t the lightest on the market. But for the comfort it provides, this weight is a worthy trade-off.
  • Clunky at Times: The substantial build can feel a bit bulky, especially if you’re used to more minimalist shoes.
  • Lacks Sensitivity: The high stack height and dense foam reduce ground feel, making these shoes less ideal for highly technical terrain.

Comparing to the Best

When lined up against competitors like the Salomon S/Lab Ultra 3 and the La Sportiva Karacal, the Wildhorse 8 holds its own with superior comfort and stability. However, it might fall short in sensitivity and weight for those seeking a more nimble experience.

The Comfort King’s Performance

  • Foot Protection: With a robust rock plate and stiff outsole rubber, the Wildhorse 8 excels in foot protection. The React midsole adds a layer of cushy comfort, absorbing shocks and reducing foot fatigue over long distances.
  • Traction: The v-shaped tread design ensures solid traction on consistent trail types. While it’s not the best for mixed surfaces, the Wildhorse 8 performs admirably on dirt, road, and rock.
  • Sensitivity: With a heel height of 36mm, ground feel is not its strong suit. However, the shoe compensates with a wide platform for added support on technical terrain.
  • Stability: The wide base and stiff outsole enhance stability, making it a reliable choice for moderate trails. For extremely technical terrain, you might want a lower stack model.
  • Comfort and Fit: The Wildhorse 8 shines in this category. Its roomy toe box and breathable upper provide a snug yet comfortable fit, ideal for long-distance adventures.
  • Weight: At over 12 ounces, it’s on the heavier side, but the plush comfort and durability make it a fair trade-off for longer runs or hikes.

Should You Buy the Nike Wildhorse 8?

If you’re looking for a trail shoe that blends comfort with stability, the Nike Wildhorse 8 is a fantastic choice. It’s perfect for those who want zero-drop comfort without the zero-drop. Ideal for long-distance trail runners who prioritize comfort over speed, the Wildhorse 8 might just be your next trail companion.

What Other Trail Running Shoes Should You Consider?

  • Saucony Peregrine 14: Offers a more dedicated fast-running shoe with soft cushioning and a slightly slimmer fit.
  • Speedcross 6 Trail-Running Shoes: For maximum technical ability and ultra comfort.
  • Altra Lone Peak 8: If you love the roomy feel but want something lighter.

The Nike Wildhorse 8 is a well-rounded trail shoe that delivers on comfort and support. It’s built for those who love to run long and steady on a variety of terrains. While it may not be the best for technical trails, it excels in providing a plush, stable ride that will keep your feet happy for miles on end.
